Black women, White men celebrity couples. They are everywhere smiling happily.

Before seeing famous Black men with White dates was common while Black women escorted by White men were more of a rarity. Well things are changing now especially among the celebrity set. Today, you are just as likely to see a photo of a glamorous brown-skinned beauty on the arm of a White man as you are to see a Black man with a White woman.

Take model Iman and her husband, rock star David Bowie. Whoopi Goldberg’s former husband is White, and the actress is often escorted by White men at Hollywood events. Chaka Khan is romantically linked to a German. Love sure is colorblind. But one cannot help but wonder why, suddenly, there appears to be an explosion of mixed celebrity couples involving Black women … not just with Whites. They are suddenly dating interracially.

Psychologists have cited several causes of this social evolution, from greater societal acceptance of interracial dating and mating to the shortage of marriageable Black men. Dr. Fred A. Clark, a social-clinical psychologist in Sacramento, California who conducts interracial and intercultural counseling groups says Black women have been dating and marrying White men "for quite some time," especially in California, but it is just more open now. "People don't feel they have to hide their true feelings anymore … It’s okay to be with someone who is different. Today, everyone is looking for someone with whom they are compatible. If that compatibility is with someone of a different race or ethnicity, then that’s who they date."

There are more than a million interracial couples in the US today, two-thirds of them involving Black men and White women. However, it has been noted by social observers that Black women are increasingly dating and marring White men.

Dr. Harriette P. McAdoo, a psychologist and professor at Michigan State University, says that Black women have been handicapped by the increasing shortage of marriageable Black men. And for famous, wealthy Black women, the ratio is even more startling- say one man for every 100 women. You just have to marry whoever is available.

"It's unfortunate, but that's the way the statistics play out these days," says Dr. McAdoo. And due to this man shortage, the new generation of Black women is more likely to consider men of other races for mates. "They would rather have a Black man, but when they can't find that, they are falling in love with White men."
